Reading is a very important part of our lives and for many the desire to read has diminished because of TV and internet videos providing us with our news, instructions on how to do tasks that we just can’t seem to figure out. Even texting has decreased our ability to read properly. Words are always misspelled or written in slang terms so we easily forget what the words should really look like. The following tips will teach you how to improve your reading skills so make sure to apply these in your life for the best results.
1. Texting:
Texting is a major issue when it comes to people’s grammar and spelling nowadays. Before texting came along, we either mailed people a letter or called them and those were our only means of communication. Since texting only limits people to sending 160 characters, people feel the need to abbreviate most if not all the words they’re writing to another person. This happens so much that people are actually forgetting how simple words are supposed to be spelled. Instead of continuing with this trend, write all the words out properly. It doesn't matter if you’re sending two or three texts instead of one, as long as it’s helping you that’s all that matters.
2. Test Yourself:
When you finish reading a chapter, pause for a minute and ask yourself what the main idea was. Think about all the characters and what their purpose was in that chapter. Another great way to remember what you've just read is to annotate, or write notes in our books about important events that took place, characters and any purpose of certain sentences that you feel are important.
3. Reading Conditions:
What are your reading conditions like? If you’re easily distracted then finding a quiet room to read in gives you more of an ability to focus on the material that’s in front of you rather than the noise being made around you. When you aren't focused, you’re more likely to miss important details in the text that can drastically change the outcome or it could be the key ingredient that brings the whole story together and without it, you’ll end up confused in the end.
4.Get Your Eyes Checked:
When you’re having trouble seeing the words that you’re reading, it makes it a struggle trying to continue and you’re unable to truly focus on what’s in front of you. Visit an optometrist if you think you might need glasses or contacts.
5.Increase Vocabulary:
Everyone benefits from having a larger vocabulary since that’s one thing many people are lacking. Many people don’t find reading interesting anymore and therefore they aren't gaining enough knowledge of new words. If you set aside fifteen to twenty minutes a day to read a book or a chapter or two of a book, you’re instantly increasing your vocabulary. Don’t buy or read any material that you wouldn't find appealing or otherwise you’ll end up bored and unable to concentrate. Having a larger vocabulary also increases your ability to be able to understand the text better. If you don’t know what a word means, stop and look it up before moving on.
Figuring out how to improve reading skills might not be easy for everyone but if you take notes and stop to learn words that you seem to stumble over every time you open the book then you’re automatically on a path to bettering your reading comprehension. Your reading skills aren't only important for reading, they also play a vital role in your communication with other people. The larger your vocabulary, the easier it’ll be to interact with others.
